World’s First Panoramic Night Train
Last Updated on March 4, 2026 by Tsiyon Hone
Norway has introduced the first panoramic night train specifically designed for aurora viewing. Features include large glass windows and immersive lighting design, allowing passengers to enjoy the northern lights without leaving their seats. This initiative is part of a growing trend in Noctourism (night tourism), which focuses on experiences best enjoyed after dark.
The train departs from Narvik and travels along the historic Ofoten Railway, a line originally built for transporting iron ore. The train makes its destination at Katterat Station, located 373 meters above sea level, completely off the road network. This isolation ensures minimal light pollution and excellent aurora visibility.

Passengers disembark at Katterat to gather around a campfire in the wilderness, enjoying the Arctic atmosphere while waiting for the aurora to appear. Instead of treating the northern lights as a passive attraction, Norway is actively building infrastructure (like panoramic trains, guided wilderness stations, and night tourism concepts) to make aurora viewing accessible and immersive.
